Chris Cass from BPS met with the residents and family members at Mountain View Nursing Home on December 22nd to provide an update on the new construction. This has been an exciting time for Mountain View and the weather has been on our side which has allowed the project to move foward smoothly. It was five months ago this coming Monday that the first structural steel was erected.
The building is now fully heated by propane fired units that keep the interior temperature between 40 - 45 degrees. There are 81 to 86 guys on the job site each day.
On the East Wing on the first and second floors the water pipes have been installed and framing is complete. Duct work for the HVAC is being installed. The sprinklers are complete on the second floor of the East Wing and are now being installed on the West Wing.
Shingling has begun with an asphalt shingle made by GAF who has been in business since 1948. A sample of the roofing insulation and shingles were brought over and are on display in the solarium of the nursing home. Chris showed the residents how there is an air gap between the shingles and the insulation. This is to keep all the shingles at the same temperature and to prevent icing and ice dams.
Vinyl siding will be delivered next week and will start being put up by the first week of January.
Currently the crew is working on completing two rooms in the East Wing so that a blower door test can be conducted. This is done by pressurizing the room using a big fan to test for any air loss through windows and doors. The test ensures the room has been built correctly and is nice and tight, and will not allow for drafts.
There has been discussion of looking for a company to perform Commissioning of the project. An independent testing company is being sought so that at the completion of the project, there will be a second set of eyes to go through the building and check all aspects of the building to make sure everything has been completed properly and is in good working order.
A resident asked, with all the insulation that is being installed, will there be air conditioning. Chris responded that each room with have a split A/C control that will allow each resident to set their room temperature with a 5 to 7 degree range of what is determined to be the normal temperature.
Over the next two weeks there will be more activity on the back of the building visible as crews working to complete insulation of exterior walls so that brick veneer can be applied.
A resident asked about the elevators. There are a total of 3 elevators. Two for resident and staff use and a third service elevator that comes direct from the kitchen. They are due to be delivered anywhere from the end of January to the second week in February. It will come in pieces and the process of putting it together and then having it certified by the state takes approximately two to three months. They are pitless hydraulic elevators. The two elevators will be able to run in the event of a fire or power loss, to allow for evacuation of wheelchair bound residents if necessary. |
